The American College of Physicians had adiscussionabout the benefits and risks of Crestor for patients with an active thyroid disorder. Dr. J. G. Hirsch, a board-certified physician in New York City, came up with the idea of using Crestor in patients with an active thyroid disorder.
“I’m a patient of my doctor,” Hirsch said, “and I’m a patient of my doctor.”
That was in April. On that occasion, a study found that Crestor was a better treatment for thyroid disorders than the anti-inflammatory drug rosuvastatin, which has been the subject of several recent studies.
The study, published in theJournal of the American Medical Associationin November, looked at the safety of Crestor in patients with an active thyroid disorder. The findings indicated that Crestor is safe for most patients, and that the benefits of the drug outweigh any potential risks.
“There is a clear benefit to patients taking Crestor,” Hirsch said. “It’s not just a medication but a treatment.”
For patients with active thyroid disorders, the most common side effects are fatigue, muscle aches, and dry skin. In some cases, these side effects are intolerable or may even be life-threatening.
“There are side effects that you and your doctor can manage with Crestor,” Hirsch said. “In some cases, they can also manage side effects by decreasing or stopping the use of Crestor.”
The drug, sold under the nameCrestor, was developed by AstraZeneca, the maker of Crestor. In 2006, AstraZeneca lost its patent to Crestor and was forced to produce a generic version. Since then, Crestor has become a household name in the anti-inflammatory market.
“This is a unique type of drug and it’s not just for patients,” said Dr. William J. K. Lee, a professor of medicine at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. “It’s a treatment that’s unique to a patient.”
In addition to its role as a treatment for an active thyroid disorder, Crestor has also been used off-label for other conditions, including thyroid cancer, high blood pressure, and anemia.
The drug is not approved for use by anyone who is on a thyroid-stimulating drug (TSH-dependent) treatment. Because the drug is not used in patients with a TSH-dependent thyroid disease, it can cause a TSH-dependent neoplasm.
In addition to its use for TSH-dependent thyroid disease, Crestor has also been used off-label in patients with certain forms of hyperthyroidism, including thyroiditis. It is also used off-label for the treatment of rhabdomyolysis (a serious form of muscle breakdown).
“It’s important for patients to have a discussion with their doctor about the benefits and risks of taking Crestor,” K. Lee said.
Lee said the use of Crestor in patients with an active thyroid disorder is controversial. “The side effects are not as common, but they are very rare,” he said.
In a recent conference on the use of medications to treat thyroid disorders, Dr. Lee urged doctors to consider the side effects of Crestor. “You need to know that there are very serious risks to the patient, and to the doctor who uses it,” he said.
“It can lead to serious side effects, including heart palpitations, myalgia, and heart palpitations,” Dr. “The risk to the patient is very low.”
The study showed that Crestor can reduce the risk of heart palpitations in patients with an active thyroid disorder.
“There is a significant risk of cardiovascular events in patients taking this drug.”
